How to Grade Pokémon Cards for Free
Learn PSA grading standards and get instant AI-powered grades without shipping your cards. Understand centering, corners, edges, and surface analysis like a professional grader, then decide with confidence whether a card is worth the cost of professional submission.
The 4 grading criteria
1. Centering — measures how well the card image is aligned within the borders. PSA 10 requires 55/45 or better on the front and 75/25 or better on the back. PSA 9 allows 60/40 front and 90/10 back, and PSA 8 allows 65/35 front and 90/10 back.
2. Corners — all four corners must be sharp and undamaged. PSA 10 corners are perfectly sharp with no wear at all. PSA 9 allows minor fuzzing, and PSA 8 allows slight corner wear that's visible on close inspection.
3. Edges — edges should be clean without whitening, chipping, or nicks, which are common from shuffling and storage. PSA 10 edges show no whitening, PSA 9 allows minor edge wear, and PSA 8 allows noticeable whitening.
4. Surface — the surface must be free of scratches, print lines, and blemishes, and holofoil cards are especially scrutinized. PSA 10 surfaces are flawless, PSA 9 may show tiny scratches under light, and PSA 8 shows light scratches visible to the naked eye.
How to use AI grading
Place your card on a flat, well-lit surface, avoiding glare from overhead lights — natural daylight works best. Photograph the front of the card so all corners and edges are visible and the card fills most of the frame. Flip the card and photograph the back with the same quality standards, since centering is measured on both sides. Upload both images to TCG CollectWorld's AI grading page, where the analysis takes about 10–20 seconds. Review your detailed results, including individual scores for centering, corners, edges, and surface, then decide whether professional grading is worth the investment.
AI grading vs professional grading
Free AI grading gives instant results in seconds with no shipping required, so your cards stay safe, and it's excellent for pre-screening bulk collections — but it cannot detect card thickness or texture issues the way a human grader can. Professional grading from PSA, BGS, or CGC typically costs $20–$150+ per card, produces an official grade that increases resale value, protects the card in a tamper-proof slab, and detects every physical imperfection, though wait times can run two to twelve months for budget tiers.
