How to Grade Pokémon Cards at Home
Before paying $20–$150+ per card to PSA, BGS, or CGC, learn to evaluate your cards yourself. This guide covers every grading criterion in the same order a professional grader checks them, plus how to use free AI pre-screening to decide which cards are worth submitting.
Step 1: Centering
Centering is the most measurable criterion and the most common reason cards miss PSA 10. Measure the border widths on the front: top vs. bottom, and left vs. right. PSA 10 requires 55/45 or better on the front and 75/25 or better on the back. PSA 9 allows 60/40 front with 75/25 back, PSA 8 allows 65/35 front with 75/25 back, and BGS 9.5 requires 55/45 or better on both sides.
Step 2: Corners
Hold the card at a 45° angle under bright light. PSA 10 corners must be perfectly sharp with no whitening or fraying. Even the slightest corner fray typically drops a card to PSA 7 or below, so check all four corners individually before deciding.
Step 3: Edges
Lay the card on a dark background and examine all four edges. A single nick on one edge usually caps a card at PSA 8, while chips or deep nicks mean PSA 7 or lower. Running your fingertip lightly along the edge often catches wear that your eyes miss.
Step 4: Surface
Under raking (angled, not direct) light, look for scratches, print lines, loss of gloss, or staining on both front and back. Holofoil cards show surface issues more clearly than non-holo cards. Creases are an instant disqualifier for grades above PSA 4.
Step 5: Use AI pre-screening
Clean your workspace with a soft, lint-free surface to avoid introducing dust or debris that shows up as surface scratches under a grader's loupe. Once you've inspected the card yourself, upload front and back photos to TCG CollectWorld's free AI grading tool for a PSA-style score before deciding whether to submit it to a paid grading service.
PSA vs BGS vs CGC — which to choose?
PSA starts around $20 and offers the most liquid resale value in the US market. BGS (Beckett) starts around $25 and provides subgrades, popular for chasing 10 Pristine cards. CGC starts around $15 and is a budget option with growing acceptance in the EU market.
